General Education Program

Dear University Community,

This May, the Faculty Senate voted overwhelmingly to change the structure of General Education.  The changes in the program will be phased in, and this phasing in will be facilitated by the University College, the Director of General Education, and faculty fellows.  Names of those appointed to those positions will follow shortly.

Faculty Leaders of the new General Education Program

On August 18, 2017, EWU Academic Affairs Provost Dr. Scott A. Gordon sent EWU Faculty the message summarized below.

I am pleased to announce the faculty who have been selected to serve as leaders in our new General Education Program.  I am very excited about the selection of these faculty, each of whom is an engaged and thoughtful leader who will take the very important roles in implementing and strengthening our general education program.

  • Chad Pritchard, Associate Professor of Geology, will serve as the Director of General Education.  Professor Pritchard has taught FYE courses as well as general education courses in Geology and is committed to collaborations between faculty, staff, students, advisors, and other administrators.  He will facilitate the work of First-Year Experience and General Education Outcomes Faculty.  Ann Le Bar, Professor of History, and Dr. Natalia Ruiz-Rubio, Associate Professor of Spanish, will serve as General Education Outcomes Faculty Fellows and will assist faculty in their efforts to incorporate the new general education goals into new and existing courses.  Dr. Le Bar has had broad and deep involvement in general education in her 25 years at EWU, and Dr. Ruiz-Rubio has served with the general education commmittee leadership.
  • Travis Masingale, Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design, will serve as the First-Year Experience Fellow.  Professor Masingale will recruit and support faculty in their FYE teaching and will invest the First-Year Experience with brand value.

These faculty will create synergy and enthusiasm around the general education model passed by the Faculty Senate in May.  They will soon be contacting chairs and faculty who teach in the general education program.  I urge you to welcome them warmly into their new positions.  I appreciate the positive impact that they, and all of the faculty who teach our incoming students, have on their success.
